Development Media International (DMI) uses radio and television to change behaviours and save lives in developing countries. Our behaviour-change campaigns are focused on reducing mortality and morbidity by giving people access to basic healthcare information and promoting healthy behaviours. Our current focus is on reducing child mortality by broadcasting messages that address the most important underlying causes of death. Key subjects for our messages include diarrhoea, hygiene, breastfeeding, and malaria.

DMI is the first media organisation to use scientific modelling in order to save the greatest number of lives in the most cost-effective way. We have developed a model that allows us to calculate the impact of our work in terms of number of lives saved. This model indicates that our approach is one of the cheapest ways of saving lives that currently exists.

We are now running a five-year cluster randomised trial in Burkina Faso, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Planet Wheeler Foundation, to test these predictions. This is the largest, most rigorous evaluation ever conducted of a mass media intervention.

DMI is currently developing the necessary partnerships to deliver a maternal and child health campaign in Zambia. Our predictions indicate that a 5-year media campaign would reduce under-5 child mortality by more than 12% and save over 20,000 lives.

Riders for Health is a non-profit NGO focused on providing reliable, cost-effective and sustainable transport solutions for health care interventions targeting rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Riders’ expertise lies in managing vehicles for organisations working in health care delivery in challenging conditions. They are motivated by the belief and first-hand knowledge that effective, reliable and appropriate transport can greatly improve and invigorate health systems.

In 2009, Riders launched a programme in the Chadiza District, Eastern Province, Zambia, in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Centre for Infectious Disease Research Zambia (CIDRZ), mobilising five Sample Transport (ST) couriers to improve the delivery of public health care by enabling the efficient detection and diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, TB and other diseases. In 2010, Riders mobilised five environmental health technicians (EHTs) operating in Chadiza District using motorcycles managed within their preventive maintenance systems. They will shortly be mobilising additional EHTs in Nyimba District. In 2012, they will be launching a new programme in Southern Province in partnership with the MoH.”

The Association of Surgeons is represented to us by Mr. Robert Lane, retired colorectal surgeon and Programme Director for International Development at ASGBI.

The Association of Surgeons role for the past 12 years has been to undertake surgical skills courses of one sort or another throughout both West and East Africa. Their upcoming visit to Zambia in October (14-22nd) is to run a brand new Course on “The Management of Surgical Emergencies”. This is a neglected area throughout sub Saharan Africa and their intention is to train not only medically qualified surgical trainees and medical officers but also health officers who work in the District Hospitals. Robert Lane believes this will be a major contribution that we in the UK can make to bring more awareness to the role of surgery in global primary health care.

The Scottish NHS Borders Twinning has a grant from THET to fund a team from Scotland to train Zambian midwives to improve acute labour room skills, and they are all set up to deliver an extensive programme in the Katete District in early November to both hospital and community midwives.

They are, however, having some difficulty with communications in the District.

They want to ensure that the community midwives will attend the course which has been internationally accredited to improve MDG 5.

They would like to contact others working in midwifery in Zambia and/or are working in or around the Katete District. They would like advice on how to ensure the course is a success.

They will probably have a few extra places on the training programme for midwives or obstetricians in the Eastern Province. This is very “hands-on” training which would be of use to staff at any level. They can send a copy of the 2-day (repeated) training programme to anyone interested.

If you can help please contact Dr Dorothy Logie: delogie@googlemail.com or Brian Magowan, consultant obstetrician, NHS Borders email: Brian.Magowan@borders.scot.nhs.uk

Organization description:

The Trust is represented to the Alliance on behalf of Prof Chris Lavy, Prof. Chris Lavy, Nuffield Dept of Orthaepedic Surgery, University of Oxford.

The Trust was initially set up in 1906 by the will of Alfred Beit, for the benefit of the people of North and South Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe). In 1954 the Trust was reconstituted by an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom as an incorporated charity and, with the advent of Federation, the country of Nyasaland (now Malawi) was included in the “Specified Area” as a beneficiary. Under Section 3 of The Act, The Beit Trust is an incorporated body. The Trust does not fundraise and seeks to continue the philanthropic work desired by the donor through the careful stewardship and maintenance in perpetuity of its existing resources.

Today the Trust is engaged in making grants within its “Beneficial Area” – namely Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe for Health, Education, Welfare and Environmental projects.

While recognising the pressing need, the Trustees are aware of the help given to AIDS alleviation and orphanages by other major donors, and, therefore, set limits to the Trust’s assistance with the pandemic.

The Trust also provides a limited number of scholarships for postgraduate courses at universities in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or South Africa. Candidates must be domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (the “Beneficial Countries”) and aged under 30 (or 35 in the case of medical doctors). Please note that the Beit Trust does not sponsor undergraduates; seldom sponsors PhDs, and rarely sponsors MBAs except in South Africa. No candidate will be considered unless his/her future work is demonstrably beneficial to the people of his/her parent country. For further details please visit the website.

Omagh midwifery student’s placement at Zambia hospital proved an ‘eye-opener’

Describing her four-week-placement at a rural hospital in Zambia, a young Omagh midwifery student said the experience was an “eye-opener”, which taught her how ‘choice’ isn’t always a given. Dawn Nelson, who is in her final year of midwifery studies at Queens University in Belfast, travelled to the South African region after being awarded the Royal College of Midwifery (RCM) scholarship for the midwifery elective. She was based at Chitokoloki hospital in rural Zambia. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in education, the 24-year-old who comes from the Hospital Road area of Omagh, told the Tyrone Constitution what sparked her decision not only to study midwifery, but to also travel thousands of miles away from home to complete her elective placement. She said: “I went onto the midwifery course directly after having studied education at Cambridge. My friend Lisa – whom I travelled with – had a friend in Zambia and when we were considering where to complete our elective study, she asked if we could join her there.

The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) was formed in 1970 by missionary health care providers. A combination of Catholic and Protestant medical committees came together, being conscious of the fact that the mission of the Church is to save souls and promote the healing ministry of Christ.

The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) acts on behalf of the 16 Christian Churches (Catholic and Protestants) with a total of 138 church health facilities and church based community organizations that share its vision, mission and core values. Registered members operate on a Not-for-Profit basis and within the policy framework of the Ministry of Health (MoH) whose vision is to provide ‘to provide equity of access to cost-effective, quality health care as close to the family as possible’

The association complements government efforts in the delivery of quality healthcare by bringing to the health sector tangible and intangible human, material, financial resources, innovation, and more importantly, Christian love and care. CHAZ believes that priority in the provision of health services both curative and preventive should be given to all including the poor, and the underserved in the rural and hard to reach areas of Zambia.

The Association is guided by a Mission Statement, vision and core values to ensure adherence to good practices and Christian ethics. CHAZ works within the framework of the National Health Strategy, and the relationship with government is guided by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) through the Ministry of Health.

In March of this year, we launched the new Zambia UK Health Workforce Alliance (Zuhwa) website. With membership growing, we’ve worked hard to improve our website by making the site easier to navigate and engineer easier to use online tools. The new website is built on WordPress, an industry leader content management system (CMS) that now powers websites servicing over 25 million people worldwide. Other features have also got an up-grade. Our new Zambia members map uses advanced geo-mapping software powered by Google. Our members event calendar is designed to not only be easier to use but easy to update.

We understand, however, that despite these improvements websites are not static creations. There is always room for improvement and we hope that members take the time to provide some feedback – what they like and what they don’t like about the site.

The Alliance is an ambitious and exciting new endeavor that has the potential to effect great change in the medical field within Zambia. We hope the new website reflects this and engages our members in a way that compliments the ideals of the project.

Sincerely

Zuhwa webteam

The AAGBI was founded in 1932 and it represents over 10,000 anaesthetists in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Through its overseas membership, the AAGBI has close contact with many other countries. There has not been a major development in British or Irish anaesthesia that has not been either initiated or promoted under the AAGBI auspices.

In 2006 the AAGBI created the Overseas Anaesthesia Fund (OAF), a charitable fund within the AAGBI Foundation (formerly the AAGBI Education and Research Trust). OAF is unique, as it allows individuals and organisations to donate directly to projects supporting anaesthetists in the developing world. The OAF distributes anesthesia literature in Zambia as well as supporting training in anaesthesia in Lusaka and Ndola.

Organisation description:

MedicineAfrica is an exciting and novel tool for online live clinical case based discussion that facilitates medical education between healthcare providers around the world over the internet.

By combining medical education and social networking over the internet it aims to connect the skills of the healthcare workforce in high income countries with the desire to support fragile health systems in lower income countries. This is achieved through online mentoring and clinical education as recommended in the Crisp report.

The tool has been successfully piloted in Somaliland where it has been used to support the first cadres of new medical graduates to be trained in the country for 15 years. The aim now is to expand the use of this tool to other healthcare professionals in Somaliland and throughout Africa. Its uniqueness lies in the ability for any healthcare professional to give live teaching and support any other health care professional with internet access wherever in world they are.

MedicineAfrica has delivered over 300 hours of training and teaching in Somaliland, and have started programmes in Sierra Leone, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana and Tanzania.

23/02/2011. Partnerships in Health Information (PHI) is piloting a remarkable new initiative – a blog called Health Information Updates to and from Africa http://jeanshawphi.wordpress.com/

Its chief aim is to promote more frequent dialogue between partners and African librarians generally about:

- News from health library partnerships and links where the library has become involved
- What is happening in the library, changes, new policies – or just a picture of your library with a description of what it shows
- News on the involvement of librarians within your organization – achievements or problems
- Training events, use of social software, telehealth initiatives
- Online resources that you have found useful – journal articles, blog pieces, websites
- Discussion of changes and innovation in your libraries, the role of librarians and knowledge brokers in the digital environment
- Whatever you may feel passionate about e.g. health information for the community, public health, research teams with librarian attached, clinical librarianship, HIV/AIDS, use of technology, etc

PHI will share what we can gather from the news sources that we scan. All of you are encouraged to ‘subscribe’. (This just means that when a new contribution is made you will be alerted by e-mail – easily ignored if you are busy).

For more information visit http://jeanshawphi.wordpress.com/

Organisation website:

http://zarhos.org/services

Organisation description:

ZARHOS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering free and quality health care services to the rural poor.

This is a start-up organization which was recently registered in Zambia in 2009.Having worked in both urban and rural areas,Dr.Gilbert Siame realized the urgent need for an organization that would reach out to the forgotten rural communities in Zambia,as most NGOs are clustered in the urban areas.Hence,he founded ZARHOS. Currently,ZARHOS is undertaking start-up projects in Chanyanya (and surrounding villages).

This is a fishing camp located on the banks of Kafue river, about 70 Kilometres from Lusaka. There is only one clinic in this area, servicing a catchment population of more than 3000.There is no clinician and transportation for patients is a huge problem,as most times patients have to walk 35 kilometres to reach the nearest hospital-Kafue district hospital.

Main focus areas include:

HIV

Advocacy for and actively involved in scale-up of paediatric ART; mitigation of the impact of HIV/AIDS on OVCs,among other things.

TB

Early case detection and contact/defaulter tracing;community education /trainings,etc.

Malaria

Community education on preventive measures and early case detection;distribution of nets, etc.

Nutrition

Reduction of morbidity and mortality from malnutrition through various interventions such as training communities on harnessing locally available foods. Also, plans under way to establish feeding centre for OVCs once the piggery, poultry and garden are operational.

Reproductive health

Provision of increased access to integrated reproductive health services and family planning;screenings for STIs,provision of youth friendly services, post -abortion care, etc.

Planned income generating activities:Piggery,chicken rearing,gardening,fish farming,crafts,candle making.

The challenges ZARHOS is facing are many. Most of what has been achieved relied on contributions from the members.Hence,we welcome material and financial support to enable us deliver these most needed health services in this area.

Based at the Institute of Psychiatry since 1992. Professor Rachel Jenkins has directed the Centre since 1997 and also heads the Section of Mental Health Policy in Health Service and Population Research.

The Collaborating Centre and Section of Mental Health Policy (Centre/Section) offer support to governments and non-governmental organisations around the world, helping them to develop and implement locally appropriate policies, services and training to promote mental health, prevent illness and treat and support people with mental health problems and their families. These projects involve collaboration with policy makers, professionals and non-governmental organisations in the health, social welfare, education and criminal justice sectors, and the design of teaching and training material suitable for each country’s specific needs.

In Zambia, Professor Jenkins supports training in mental health in Chainama Hills College and Mental Hospital, Lusaka; collaborates with the Mental Health lead at the Ministry of Health in developing a mental health policy; and supports the development of the Mmed in Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, University of Zambia.
